Amazon Synopsis: Recognizing you’ve done something wrong is hard. Apologizing is even harder. Punk the Skunk liked to tease. Normally, his teasing was harmless. But today was not a normal day. On this not-normal day, Punk did some not-harmless teasing. When Punk realizes his teasing has gone too far, will he be able to do what it takes to get his friends back, or will it be too late?
Punk the Skunk Learns to Say Sorry is the spectacular debut book in the new Punk and Friends series by Misty Black. Punk liked making his friends laugh. The more they laughed the more pranks Punk would play, teasing and joking and just being funny. At least, that’s what Punk thought. But one day, his friends decide Punk is not so funny anymore. In fact, Punk is just being a bully! When no one will hang out or play with him or eat lunch with him anymore, Punk has to take a look at his behavior. He realizes he’s gone way beyond normal teasing and joking and makes a sincere effort to make up for his actions.
This is an important book for kids of all ages – it’s never too early to learn about bullying behavior. The author gently shows young readers how pranks and jokes can quickly accelerate, and she does so without “preaching or teaching.” Instead, the message plays out through thoughtfully constructed prose that kids will resonate with and learn from organically. Punk goes through a complete character arc and it’s fun to watch as he journeys from attention-seeker to blaming others to self-realization and finally to taking responsibility for his action and making things right.
The illustrations are fabulous! The bright colors will draw the readers into the story and the adorable characters are just a joy to watch. They complement the story and add significantly to the weight of the important message.
The last few pages of the book are where the teaching comes in. The author collaborated with an elementary school counselor to provide parents and teachers with discussion tips around bullying and what to do if you or a friend is being bullied. Love this. Punk the Skunk Learns to Say Sorry is highly recommended reading for preschool and elementary school students in general, but we could all use this gentle reminder.
